The trajectory of Florida's football plans have shifted in response to the looming threat of projected hurricane Idalia. As the tropical storm's impact became increasingly imminent, the Gators made adjustments to travel arrangements for the Thursday night season opener against Utah.
Coach Billy Napier shared his perspective on the situation, as the university canceled classes Monday for the next two days in response to tracking the storm.
Rather than leaving Wednesday, the team was planning to sky out Tuesday morning.
In preparation for the higher altitude, Napier said that Florida's sports science department delved into research on the matter. They also reached out to NFL teams to glean insights into maintaining peak performance amidst unexpected changes to their travel plans.
Napier emphasized that conversations with NFL teams guided their decision to adhere to their regular travel routine and minimize altitude exposure before the game.
"The altitude, we've spent extensive time researching that relative to our sports science and our training staff," he elaborated, underscoring their commitment to stability during uncertain times. "All indications tell us to go stay in your normal routine."
Aware of the time constraints for adjusting to altitude, Napier highlighted the pragmatic nature of their approach. "It really takes 10 days to get adjusted," he acknowledged, emphasizing their confidence in the revised plan. "Get in, get out... We feel good about our plan."
Nonetheless, the campus is still eager to cheer on the Gators in their first game of the season. With the next two days off in Gainesville, it will give people time to prepare.
If you’re in the area or the trajectory of Idalia make sure the gas tank is full and portable chargers are charged so there will always be a way to watch the Gators
