FLORIDA FOOTBALL: Chris McClellan Focused on the Gators Before Anything

As the college football offseason rolls on, fans of football are anticipating the upcoming season, particularly the evolvement of players from year-to-year.

In the Florida football program over the years, it is easy to pick out standout guys who have transformed during their time in Gainesville to become some of the top players at their position. Anthony Richardson is a prime example as he took his first year as the day-one starter turn into a top-5 draft pick. Kairr Elam a few years back shined in a bowl game against Miami that would foreshadow his success not only at Florida but in the NFL.

One name that has generated excitement is Chris McClellan, the talented defensive tackle who has showcased not only his dedication to personal growth but also the strengthened bond of the Gators' defensive unit. McClellan's journey, from his true freshman season to his current state, reflects both individual determination and the collective push for excellence within the team.

On Monday McClellan spoke to the media and discussed both personal and team growth that occurred this offseason.

McClellan's Evolution and Offseason Gains

Chris McClellan's freshman season was marked by impressive contributions to the Gators' defense. He emerged as a valuable asset, participating in all 13 games and recording notable statistics, including 23 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

The transition from high school football to the competitive SEC was not without its challenges, particularly adapting to the speed of the game. McClellan's perseverance and commitment to hard work were pivotal in overcoming these hurdles.

Entering his second spring football season in Gainesville, McClellan's growth is evident both mentally and physically. He reflects on the previous year, acknowledging the rapid pace of his first spring and contrasting it with the familiarity and preparedness he now feels. The defensive tackle has been focusing on strength, explosiveness, and speed through the team's Identity program. His bench press has surged to an impressive 400-425 pounds, and he claims a remarkable squat of 600 pounds. McClellan attributes these improvements not only to his dedication in the weight room but also to his enhanced nutritional habits and better sleep patterns.

In addition to being quicker and leaner, McClellan, along with others on the defensive line committed themselves to making their bodies a priority. During the offseason, McClellan mentioned one thing he was most proud of was cutting 15 pounds and showed him he can do whatever he puts his mind to.

McClellan hinted that his secret to getting to 315 in the spring compared to 330, was giving up fast food, and eating more fruits and vegetables.

Defensive Line Unity and Growth

While McClellan's personal journey is captivating, it's the collective strides of the Gators' defensive line that underscore the team's potential for the upcoming season. New defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong has instilled an aggressive mindset in the defense, aiming to make plays and assert dominance. This renewed approach resonates with McClellan, who praises the team's focus on aggression and unity.

McClellan exudes confidence in the defensive line's capabilities, highlighting the depth, size, and talent within the group. He speaks highly of the camaraderie and synergy that has developed among his fellow defensive linemen. The departure of key players has opened the door for McClellan to potentially secure a starting position, and he seems poised to seize this opportunity.

Together Focused on One Goal

One of the most promising aspects of the Florida Gators' offseason is the increased cohesion within the team. McClellan emphasizes the stronger bonds formed among players, citing the extended time spent together as a significant factor. The divide between older and younger players that existed in the past has lessened, leading to a more united and harmonious team atmosphere.

"We're closer because we're had more time together. ... There's less of a bridge," McCllelan said.

Looking ahead, McClellan acknowledges the challenges that await, including facing ranked opponents like Utah. However, he maintains a steadfast focus on the team's own growth and performance. The mantra of "beating the Gators before worrying about anyone else" reflects the program's dedication to self-improvement and unity.

"It's good but the Gators have to beat the Gators before we worry about anyone else," McClellan said on facing No. 14 Utah to open the season.
