The Florida Gators begin the fourth spring under Billy Napier with arguably its best group of pass catchers.

There was a familiar sound coming from right inside the Heavener Indoor facility as the Florida Gators were in the midst of their first of 15 spring practices. The Gators coming off their first 8-win season since 2021 are one of the media darlings of the offseason due to a resurgent defense and star quarterback DJ Lagway.
The sound that was noted earlier was that of receiver coach Billy Gonzales, who continues to be one of, if not the best receiver coach in the entire country. Known for his meticulous nature, and almost sadistic attention to detail, Gonzales was in midseason form taking his group to task about the little things that separate his group from those in other programs.
Known as a stickler for blocking, pad level, and route depth, Gonzales has at his disposal arguably the most talented group he has had since returning to Florida in 2022. The Gators return receivers Tre’ Wilson, Aiden Mizell, Tank Hawkins and TJ Abrams from last year’s roster, while adding 5-star recruits Vernell Brown III, Dallas Wilson, and Nashaun Montgomery. All three newcomers flashed early in practice Thursday with SEC ready physiques and talent, while the four returnees mentioned look more mature mentally and physically. Rounding out the group is transfer J. Michael Sturdivant who comes to Gainesville from UCLA with 123 catches and 13 touchdowns. At 6-2.5, 216 pounds Sturdivant is a big body that brings proven production and experience to an immensely talented group.

The receivers are thought to be solid at all three positions and offer enough depth that the Gators may look to explore personnel groupings with four receivers in addition to the two and three receiver groupings commonly used by the Gator offense.
Florida will resume practice on Saturday morning and will continue with three practices per week leading up to the Orange and Blue Game on April 12th.

Other Notes: Quarterback DJ Lagway was on a limited pitch count as noted by Head Coach Billy Napier early in the day. The limited participation is thought to be precautionary and not long term. Transfer quarterback Harrison Bailey took additional reps and looked good on deep and intermediate throws.
