“I feel like it fits what I do well because of my playing style. I feel like I’m very active in playing Star. That’s the position you get that you activate, play whether it is in run coverage blitzing or drop back in coverage.” – Kamar Wilcoxson

Kamar Wilcoxson is a 6-fooot-1 corner/safety who plays on the back end of the defense. Wilcoxson is from Lithonia, Ga. who spent a year in Bradenton, where he had a stint at IMG academy. He spoke with GatorBait on the Gator Collective Corner/Buddy Martin Show recently.

Question: “Where are you most comfortable position-wise on the field?”

Answer: “Wherever my coach needs me to make the team better”

Question: “How much have you learned from a guy like (assistant head coach-defense/cornerbacks) Corey Raymond?”

Answer: “I've learned a lot from Coach Raymond, but actually me playing I have been playing more safety and Star now so I have actually been playing more under Coach (Co-defensive coordinator) Toney, so I deal with Coach Toney more than Coach Raymond, but during this parts of practice where we come together to work so I still get to learn from both of them. I say I learn a little more from Coach Tony.”

Question: “Can you tell us a bit about Coach Tony, what’s it like to play for him?”

Answer: “He’s a very precise coach, he wants stuff the way he wants it done. He teaches very well; I feel like the whole time I’ve played football he’s probably the best when it comes to breaking down everything.”

Question: “How do you end up at IMG?”

Answer: “In eighth grade, I had a 7-on-7 tournament down there in the springtime and the coaches ended up seeing me. They ended up trying to get me to go there every year of high school, and then I finally ended up going from my junior year going into my senior year. I only ended up going the last semester and enrolling early, but never actually ended up playing there.”

Question: “How does the Star position fit what you do well?”

Answer: “I feel like it fits what I do well because of my playing style. I feel like I’m very active in playing Star. That’s the position you get that you activate, play whether it is in run coverage blitzing or drop back in coverage.”

Question: “Talk about your blitz packages and if there is a certain technique that you use?”

Answer: “I feel like I’m pretty good at blitzing and I’m going to have a good number of sacks this year. I work with Brenton Cox who I feel is the best pass rusher in the country.”

Question: “Talk about some of the guys and how good they are and how good they can be?”

Answer: “We have a bunch of ballers across the board. We have a talented deep roster. I would say collectively as a defense, we have a very good defense.”
