Sumrall expands Florida football roster to 63 veterans, 19 rookies

What Curt Cignetti has proven at Indiana is you can win big without loading up on 4-star or better recruits or portal transfers. The Hoosiers are a game away from a national championship and an historic unbeaten season and Cignetti has done it without spending big NIL bucks to load up on the biggest names in the portal. The Indiana roster was built systematically by a coach who values effort and productivity far more than reputation.

It would seem that Jon Sumrall is following a similar approach with his Florida roster rebuild. As of Friday night, Florida’s roster stood at 82 -- 63 veterans and 19 freshman/jucos. Sumrall still has 23 scholarships available (new NCAA roster limit is 105) but the heavy lifting has already been done. With late registration all but over, the next two-to-three days will be critical. Also at Sumrall’s disposal is the February signing date for high school and junior college kids.

Here is a breakdown of the accounted for scholarships and that the Gators need.

Quarterback (3): Four on scholarship is a necessity. Five is a luxury.

Running Back (5): Six would be a luxury but maybe someone who is more slot than RB?

Wide Receiver (10): Need two more at a minimum, but three more would be nice.

Tight end (5): Need one more since signee Kent might move to tackle.

O-line (19): Need 2-4 more veterans since six of the 18 are freshmen.

D-line/EDGE (13): Three veterans have been added, still need 2-3 more.

Linebackers (7): Three more is a necessity, especially linebackers who are skilled in coverage.

Secondary (15): Spread offenses require lots of corners, so minimum of three more.

Special teams (5): Need backup kicker.
