Sumrall: Tom Brady Would Have Been ‘Under Too Much Duress’ Against Georgia

Florida coach Jon Sumrall said Monday he is not sure even Tom Brady could have helped the Gators in Saturday’s 27-8 loss at Georgia, because of the pressure a quarterback was under.
“I don’t know if Tom Brady was our quarterback on Saturday if it would have helped us. And I’m not trying to be a smart aleck. He would have been under too much duress and pressure to operate.”
That is Sumrall, as quoted by the Associated Press.
Florida was held to 54 rushing yards on 28 carries, 1.9 yards per attempt, and 252 total yards, according to ESPN. Georgia ran for 217 yards on 42 carries and finished with 318 total yards. The Gators turned the ball over four times and converted 4 of 12 third downs.
“We had too many balls in jeopardy”
Sumrall did not name a starting quarterback between Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. He said neither played well enough.
“We had too many balls that were in jeopardy with both guys.”
“I need both of them to be ready to be our starter at any point,” Sumrall said. “We’re going to move forward with, ‘Hey man, both of you guys are competing every day.’”
Vernell Brown III: “He wants to play”
On wide receiver Vernell Brown III, Sumrall said the injury is real and that Brown is frustrated.
“He wants to play. He’s doing everything he can to play. He’s (ticked) off he can’t play, and he’s doing everything in his power to play.”
Sumrall said the Gators thought they were past the injury. “It’s a real injury that we thought we were on the other side of that he had a setback last week, and it sucks,” he said.
Florida (5-3, 3-3 SEC) hosts Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:45 p.m. ET on SEC Network.
