On Saturday afternoon in Lexington, Ky., the Florida Gators faced another setback on the road. They struggled in every aspect of the game right from the start, falling behind by a staggering 23 points in the first quarter and a half, and were unable to mount a recovery.

The final score stood at Kentucky 33, No. 22 Florida 14. This loss puts Florida at 0-2 in away games this season, having also suffered a significant defeat against Utah in Week 1. Looking back to the previous season, Florida's record in road games under second-year coach Billy Napier is 1-5.
Despite entering the game with their first three-game winning streak in three years, the Gators seemed out of sync from the beginning. Passes were off the mark on offense, and tackles were missed on defense. They struggled significantly in the line of scrimmage and in gaining ground on both sides of the ball.
Kentucky's running back, Ray Davis, dominated the first half, racking up an impressive 280 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries. This included a 75-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, putting the Wildcats ahead 16-0 in the second quarter.
In total, Kentucky rushed for 329 yards on just 36 carries, a formidable performance against a Florida defense that had entered the game ranked 5th nationally and 1st in the SEC, allowing an average of only 244.8 yards per game. The Wildcats amassed 259 yards in the first half alone and closed with 398 for the game.
Gators quarterback Graham Mertz missed connecting with open receivers early on, which proved costly as the Florida offense gained fewer than 50 yards in the first quarter. Only a sustained drive late in the second quarter prevented the Gators from being shut out in the opening half.
Even after falling behind by 23 points again, this time in the third quarter, Mertz connected with Ricky Pearsall for a 33-yard touchdown pass, bringing the deficit to two scores. However, Florida couldn't narrow the gap any further.
Mertz's final stats were 25-of-30 passing for 244 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Florida's rushing game was limited to just 69 yards.
Florida will have to go back to the drawing board with personnel and play-calling. Game management was questionable at best, the Gators have to turn things around before they get to bulk of their SEC schedule.
