- FLORIDA BASEBALL: Gators Get Former Big South Preseason Freshman of the Year
Former Charleston Southern utility man Ashton Wilson, a rising sophomore from Orlando, has joined Florida's 2024 baseball roster, bringing the team's total player count to 36. Initially graded as a shortstop in the 2022 class while at TNXL Academy, a baseball academy in Central Florida, Wilson was ranked at No. 402 nationally for his position by Perfect Game. However, his outstanding performances during his debut fall with the Buccaneers quickly elevated his status. This led to Wilson earning the prestigious Big South Preseason Freshman of the Year accolade from D1Baseball. Throughout the season, Wilson showcased consistent and impressive performances at the plate, maintaining a batting average of .252. His contributions included three home runs, 20 RBI, 13 stolen bases and an impressive .380 on-base percentage. Yet, what truly sets Wilson apart is his remarkable defensive skills. Standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 184 pounds, Wilson's sophomore year was marked by his dynamic presence all over the field. He displayed his versatility by playing various positions, seamlessly transitioning between the infield and outfield. Wilson's proficiency spans across all three outfield positions and nearly every infield spot, excluding catcher and pitcher. This adaptability could be key to the Gators, particularly in critical moments during games. Wilson's arrival marks Florida's seventh transfer addition during the off-season. He joins a notable roster of newcomers, including former players like Armando Albert from FAU, Jaylen Guy from Liberty, Brody Donay from Virginia Tech, Colby Shelton from Alabama, Tanner Garrison from Coastal Carolina and junior college infielder Landon Russell. Additionally, the Gators had initially secured a commitment from All-American UCLA right-handed pitcher transfer Kelly Austin. However, Austin opted to sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Houston Astros, launching his professional career. Consequently, the team's focus on transfers has primarily been on bolstering their position players. Despite not acquiring any transfer pitchers, the Gators remain well-prepared for the 2024 season. The team can rely on a blend of freshman pitching talent and returning players. In other baseball news, former Gator Sterlin Thompson has been moved up to the Double A division in the minors for the Colorado Rockies. Thompson has had an impressive start to his professional career and is predicted to see the big leagues as early as mid next season.

- FLORIDA FOOTBALL: Justus Boone Tears ACL
The Florida Gators football program was dealt a significant blow during the team's recent fall camp scrimmage, as defensive lineman Justus Boone suffered a torn ACL. This news came to light following confirmation from the head coach, Billy Napier, on Friday morning after it was learned Booned was carted off the field at Thursday’s scrimmage. Boone, a towering presence at 6 feet 4 inches and weighing in at 263 pounds, was poised to assume a vital role as the starting strong-side defensive end for UF. The injury occurred after Boone celebrated making a play and was in the process of leaving the field when the non-contact injury occurred. Napier remains optimistic about the team's resilience. He acknowledged that Boone's absence will necessitate strategic adjustments and emphasized the challenge of filling the void left by not only Boone's on-field ability but also his leadership attributes. "This could really galvanize our team," Napier said. "This is a guy players really care about... We're going to rally around Boone." Florida linebacker Justus Boone - Photo Credit Chris Spears Several players are being considered for expanded roles given Boone’s absence. Tyreak Sapp, an experienced defensive lineman standing at 6 feet 3 inches and weighing 271 pounds, is acandidate for a more central position. With his history of excelling over or outside the tackle and his athleticness, Sapp represents a potential asset for the defensive end position. Sophomore Jack Pyburn, known for his strong work ethic, could also be in line for an increased role. Despite limited playing time in the previous season, Pyburn’s commitment to self-improvement and his knack for making impactful plays on the field make him a contender. Transfer Caleb Banks, originally focused on the defensive tackle unit, is another player who could be tapped to strengthen the defense's ranks. His versatility and athleticism provide the adaptability needed to thrive in different roles. While Boone's absence will undoubtedly be felt in terms of talent, Napier underscores that the team's priority is to maintain a sense of unity and guidance. The challenge ahead revolves around recreating the leadership presence that Boone brought to the team. In his comments, Napier stated, "Justus brings some experience to the table and leadership in general. The challenge here will be replacing that, that starting presence. We're going to keep him connected to that, that unit, to the team. I think the big thing here is we have a few more things we have to learn with these players in general. There will be some adjustments that need to be made." As the Gators progress wrap up their fall camp, they will undoubtedly face challenges that test their mettle. The team's ability to rally together, adjust lineups and lean on young guys will be key to their success. “All Gators need to lift up Boone today. He’s one of the best ones we have,” Napier said.

- FLORIDA FOOTBALL: Chris McClellan Focused on the Gators Before Anything
As the college football offseason rolls on, fans of football are anticipating the upcoming season, particularly the evolvement of players from year-to-year. In the Florida football program over the years, it is easy to pick out standout guys who have transformed during their time in Gainesville to become some of the top players at their position. Anthony Richardson is a prime example as he took his first year as the day-one starter turn into a top-5 draft pick. Kairr Elam a few years back shined in a bowl game against Miami that would foreshadow his success not only at Florida but in the NFL. One name that has generated excitement is Chris McClellan, the talented defensive tackle who has showcased not only his dedication to personal growth but also the strengthened bond of the Gators' defensive unit. McClellan's journey, from his true freshman season to his current state, reflects both individual determination and the collective push for excellence within the team. On Monday McClellan spoke to the media and discussed both personal and team growth that occurred this offseason. Photo of Florida defensive lineman Chris McClellan. Photo via Tiffany Franco/UAA FloridaGators.com McClellan's Evolution and Offseason Gains Chris McClellan's freshman season was marked by impressive contributions to the Gators' defense. He emerged as a valuable asset, participating in all 13 games and recording notable statistics, including 23 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery. The transition from high school football to the competitive SEC was not without its challenges, particularly adapting to the speed of the game. McClellan's perseverance and commitment to hard work were pivotal in overcoming these hurdles. Entering his second spring football season in Gainesville, McClellan's growth is evident both mentally and physically. He reflects on the previous year, acknowledging the rapid pace of his first spring and contrasting it with the familiarity and preparedness he now feels. The defensive tackle has been focusing on strength, explosiveness, and speed through the team's Identity program. His bench press has surged to an impressive 400-425 pounds, and he claims a remarkable squat of 600 pounds. McClellan attributes these improvements not only to his dedication in the weight room but also to his enhanced nutritional habits and better sleep patterns. In addition to being quicker and leaner, McClellan, along with others on the defensive line committed themselves to making their bodies a priority. During the offseason, McClellan mentioned one thing he was most proud of was cutting 15 pounds and showed him he can do whatever he puts his mind to. McClellan hinted that his secret to getting to 315 in the spring compared to 330, was giving up fast food, and eating more fruits and vegetables. Defensive Line Unity and Growth While McClellan's personal journey is captivating, it's the collective strides of the Gators' defensive line that underscore the team's potential for the upcoming season. New defensive coordinator Austin Armstrong has instilled an aggressive mindset in the defense, aiming to make plays and assert dominance. This renewed approach resonates with McClellan, who praises the team's focus on aggression and unity. McClellan exudes confidence in the defensive line's capabilities, highlighting the depth, size, and talent within the group. He speaks highly of the camaraderie and synergy that has developed among his fellow defensive linemen. The departure of key players has opened the door for McClellan to potentially secure a starting position, and he seems poised to seize this opportunity. Together Focused on One Goal One of the most promising aspects of the Florida Gators' offseason is the increased cohesion within the team. McClellan emphasizes the stronger bonds formed among players, citing the extended time spent together as a significant factor. The divide between older and younger players that existed in the past has lessened, leading to a more united and harmonious team atmosphere. "We're closer because we're had more time together. ... There's less of a bridge," McCllelan said. Looking ahead, McClellan acknowledges the challenges that await, including facing ranked opponents like Utah. However, he maintains a steadfast focus on the team's own growth and performance. The mantra of "beating the Gators before worrying about anyone else" reflects the program's dedication to self-improvement and unity. "It's good but the Gators have to beat the Gators before we worry about anyone else," McClellan said on facing No. 14 Utah to open the season. Chris McClellan's journey from his freshman season to his current state underscores the power of determination and the impact of a supportive team environment. As the Gators prepare for the upcoming season, their emphasis on being the best versions of themselves while working together as a unit seems promising heading into the 2023 season.
- FLORIDA RECRUITING: An Early Glance at 2025 Priority Targets
Although it may be hard to look all the way to the 2025 class right now with the start of the 2023 season upon us and the 2024 class shaking up, it's never too early to take a peak at what lies ahead. Fortunately for the Gators, as can be seen with the current state of the 2024 class, the future looks bright for Florida recruiting. Florida already has a load of offers out to members of the class of 2025, but do not hold any commitments as it stands. It should be obvious this far out, but that is no concern for Florida. Few teams have commitments in the 2025 class, and of those schools that do, many have just a single pledge. Furthermore, it is very common for commitments made that far out to be a revolving door, as these athletes are still extremely young and have a long road ahead. August 1 marked the first day that college coaches were able to reach out to prospects in the 2025 class. Prior to that date, prospects were only allowed to reach out to coaches on their own or meet with members of the staff during campus visits. Nonetheless, here's a look at some of the Gators' top targets for the class of 2025. At the top of the list, at least for the moment, is five-star DL Armondo Blount. He is heavily regarded as the most talented player in the state of Florida for the class of 2025, which obviously throws him into the priority column. The Miami (Fl.) native has almost 30 offers, including one from Florida. Although extremely early On3 has the Gators as the narrow favorite to land Blount and also note that he has been to Gainesville five times already. Another big target for Napier and company is four-star LB Nathaniel Owusu-Boateng. Another IMG Academy prospect, Owusu-Boateng is among the top linebackers in the class of 2025, being ranked No. 6 and No. 3 in the position group by On3 and 247Sports respectively. He has also taken multiple visits to Gainesville and will be another name to watch for the foreseeable future. Florida wracked up an impressive LB group in the 2024 class, one that inside linebackers coach Jay Bateman would love to continue to expand in 2025. Rounding out potentially the three largest targets for Florida to date in the class of 2025 is four-star running back Waltez Clark. The Plant High School (Tampa, Fl.) product has been a primary focus by running back coach Jabbar Juluke early on in this process and will likely continue to be through the next year. Florida is again regarded as the early favorite to land Clark by both On3 and 247Sports. While it is still extremely early in the process, the Gators have made their priorities known and have taken their time since August 1 to contact some of the top recruits in the class of 2025. 247Sports gathered an updated list of prospects in the class of 2025 that Florida reached out to on August 1, which can be found below: - Five-star WR Caleb Cunningham - Five-star OT Michael Fasusi - 5-star DB DJ Pickett - 5-star DL Armondo Blount - Four-star EDGE Amaree Williams - Four-star RB James Simon - Four-star Edge Bryce Davis - Four-star Edge Justin Hill - Four-star LB Tarvos Alford - Four-star RB Alvin Henderson - Four-star LB Nathaniel Owusu-Boteng - Four-star DL Jalen Wiggins - Four-star LB Keylan Moses - Four-star CB Onis Konanbanny - Four-star DL Isaiah Gibson - Four-star safety Hylton Stubbs - Four-star OT Owen Strebig - Four-star WR Naeshaun Montgomery - Four-star RB Akylin Dear - Four-star Edge Javion Hilson - Four-star LB Zayden Walker - Four-star CB Jaboree Antoine - Four-star QB Tramell Jones (FSU commit) - Four-star S Jarcoby Hopson - Four-star TE Ryan Ghea - Three-star CB Chris McCorkle - Unranked DL Wilnerson Telemaque - Unranked DL Jarquez Carter - Unranked WR Mike Peterson Jr.
