  • BREAKING: Four-Star Simmons Flips

In a major turn of events, quarterback Austin Simmons, who has been committed to the Gators since April, has flipped his commitment to Ole Miss and announced his plans to reclassify to the 2023 class. Simmons was formerly a member of the class of 2025, but rumors have been circulating for weeks that he could reclassify to the 2023 class. Earlier this week, reports came out suggesting that the reclassification was a done deal, but Simmons' family publicly discredited the reports and said that Simmons was still enrolled at Moore Haven to player spring football. The four-star has been highly regarded as one of the top arms in the 2025 class but now makes a huge jump in an unprecedented move. Florida appeared to have Simmons locked down for a few months after the Pahokee (Fl.) native announced his commitment in April. However, he took a visit to Lane Kiffin and the Rebels at the beginning of June and that quickly progressed into a potential flip. It was rumored that Simmons returned to Gainesville at some point after his Ole Miss visit, but it has not been confirmed. The decision is an interesting one, as Simmons elects to join a quarterback room that has a lot more talent and experience than Florida's. The Rebels have an interesting quarterback situation on their hands, with transfers Spencer Sanders and Walker Howard joining three other quarterbacks on the roster fighting for the starting job. With the addition of Simmons, Ole Miss has six quarterbacks. It was unclear from the start of the reclassification discussions exactly what Simmons' plan would be if he reclassified. The assumption was that he would not at all be in the starting conversation for this upcoming season, but he would gain the benefit of learning from the coaching staff and fellow quarterbacks. Simmons' official announcement puts an end to a confusing saga that draws similarities to the Jaden Rashada situation that unfolded months ago. The Gators 2025 recruiting class is again an empty canvas with their lone commit, Simmons, not only reclassifying but also flipping his commitment. The move further affirms DJ Lagway as the Gators' future quarterback stud. Keep in mind, the Gators host Ole Miss in 2024.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Aaron Chiles Makes it Four!

We've been talking about the "June Bloom" for weeks on end. And fans, rightfully so, have been asking when we may finally see results. Luckily for us, Billy Napier made sure we didn't have to wait any longer. After another busy weekend of official visits, Napier and company landed not one, not two, not three, but FOUR commits Saturday, with linebacker Aaron Chiles being the latest addition to the class of 2024. Chiles was viewed as heavily leaning towards Michigan, but clearly enjoyed his time in Gainesville this past weekend enough to warrant a verbal commit. The four-star linebacker joins an already talented group in the 2024 class including four-stars Adarius Hayes and Myles Graham. With plenty of time left to continue recruiting for 2024, the Gators are already in an amazing spot when it comes to recruiting the linebacker position. Chiles had only been to Gainesville one other time, which was nearly a year ago, but had long planned on making it back for an official visit. Florida is the middle of three OV's he has set up, after he was at Clemson earlier in the month. He has plans to take an official visit to Michigan next weekend, but it's now unclear if he still intends to do so after his decision. He is a talented, big back with a lot of upside and an ability to line up in several different spots, including both inside and as a blitzer on the edge. In addition, he is very physical and has demonstrated a strong ability to shed blocks and get involved in the box in run support. Chiles is regarded as one of the top linebackers in the class of 2024 by both On3 and 247Sports. He is ranked as the No. 9 linebacker by On3 and the No. 6 backer for 247Sports. Regardless of where you look, the Gators get a good one. While Napier and the rest of the Gators' program hopes that the recruiting run will continue well after June, June 17 will go down as the highlight of Napier's short time in Gainesville so far. After all, it's called the "June Bloom" for a reason.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Amaris Williams Makes it Three Commits

Make it three! Amaris Williams, another four star, announced his commitment to Florida on Saturday evening after a great official visit over the course of the weekend. Williams joins Amir Jackson and Nasir Johnson who committed earlier in the day, brining Napier's total to three new commits on the day. The North Carolina native had not been to Florida on a visit before his official visit this past weekend, but it obviously payed off. Williams announced his commitment in front of the other visitors and their families during the group's trip to Spurrier's. The dinner has been a hot topic from those who have taken visits this month, with many appreciating the museum aspect of the restaurant. Entering the weekend, it appeared that Penn State was his top option, but Florida had gained ground entering the visit, and hit the jackpot Saturday evening, Williams and Johnson are the first and second defensive line commits for the class of 2024, which has been an area of focus for Napier and company who hope to revamp the group beginning with this season. The class of 2024 shoots towards the top of the ranks nationally, after taking a drop over the last few weeks. With the addition of the three, four-star prospects today, the Gators now sit third nationally according to On3. Williams is ranked as the No. 21 defensive lineman in the class of 2024 according to On3 and is another fantastic addition for the defensive side of the ball. After the day started out rough with the news of Austin Simmons flipping, Napier and the Gators certainly made the best out of it.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Four-Star Nasir Johnson Commits

Billy Napier continues to make waves Saturday as he secures his second and third commitments of the day. After Amir Jackson's commitment earlier in the day, Nasir Johnson and Amaris Williams announced their commitments to Florida this evening. Both Johnson and Williams are four-stars according to the On3 industry rankings and give yet another boost to an already impressive 2024 class. Johnson is a four-star defensive lineman from Dublin (Ga.) who had been leaning towards Florida, but also had a lot of interest in Florida State. He was in Gainesville this weekend on an official visit after taking an OV to South Carolina the week prior. It was his fourth trip to campus this year. He is scheduled to take another official visit to FSU on June 23, but it is unclear if that is still his plan after his announcement. The Dublin High School prospect has played both ways in high school, getting reps as a right tackle in addition to his role on the defensive line. While the expectation is that he will play on defense, it's always nice to have some flexibility if needed. In addition to his action on the field, Johnson also threw shotput and discus for his high school track and field team. Johnson's frame would excite any coach, and that holds true for the Gators who gain a verbal commitment from the 6-foot-4, 300 pound high school junior. With the three additions today, the 2024 class now ranks third nationally according to On3, up from No. 13 earlier in the day. Meanwhile, 247Sports has the Gators sitting at the No. 8 spot nationally. Fans have been begging to see the big official weekends pay off. Today, it did.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Fortunes Turn with Amir Jackson Commitment

After a challenging start to the morning with Austin Simmons flipping to Ole Miss, Florida Gator fans finally received some positive news. The month had been tough on the recruiting trail, but Saturday brought a significant breakthrough as four-star tight end Amir Jackson from Portal, GA, committed to the program. With his commitment, Gator fans have reason to be happy again. Jackson, currently listed as an athlete but playing as a wide receiver for Portal High School, is expected to play a vital role in the Gators' offense. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 223 pounds, he brings size and versatility to the team. His commitment to Florida came after considering offers from top programs like Alabama, Auburn, Miami, and Tennessee. Ranked No. 108 overall in the 247Sports Composite, Jackson is recognized as one of the top-10 athletes in the nation. Making his decision while on an official visit in Gainesville, Florida, Jackson was a primary target for the Gators, who were in need of a standout player at the tight end position. The recruitment efforts of new tight ends coach Russ Callaway played a significant role in securing Jackson's commitment. Callaway has showcased impressive recruiting skills since taking on the job, and his involvement was instrumental in landing this talented prospect. With Jackson's commitment, the Gators see a boost in their team rankings, moving up six spots to No. 16 in the 247Sports Composite. Florida now boasts five players among the top 108 in the nation, including four among the top 53. The team also has two five-star commitments in quarterback DJ Lagway and safety Xavier Filsaime. The addition of Amir Jackson not only adds talent to the Gators' roster but also provides a much-needed boost to the spirits of fans who have endured a challenging month on the recruiting front. With his commitment, the Gators get a much-needed tight end for the class after whiffing on previous recruits. In an eventful Saturday morning, Florida has taken a massive blow on the trail but remarkably got right back up with Jackson's pledge.

  • Lagway Shows-Off Arm at Elite 11

The three-day Elite 11 quarterback competition kicked off on Wednesday, with many of the nation's top passers on site in Los Angeles competing to earn the Elite 11 crown.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Gators Add International O-Line Recruit

Florida's offensive line has gained a promising new recruit with the addition of Germany-based standout Noel Portnjagin. Following their recent acquisition of former South Carolina commit Mike Williams, the Gators continue to strengthen their roster with Portnjagin's commitment.

  • Gators Pick Up All-Conference Pitcher

Just when we thought football and basketball were delivering about as much Gator recruiting news as possible, Kevin O'Sullivan and the Gators baseball program add an all-conference honoree to their pitching staff. Kelly Austin, a former UCLA Bruin, announced his decision to transfer to the Florida Gators Wednesday. The righthander will have one season of eligibility when he joins the roster for 2024. Austin spent two years with the Bruins after a short stint at Orange Coast College but is coming off of the best season of his career. In 17 appearances, 13 of which were starts, he registered a 3.39 ERA across 82.1 innings pitched. Austin allowed just 72 hits and 31 earned runs while striking out 104 batters with a .229 batting average against. With the Gators in the midst of a potential National Championship season and their eyes set on Omaha, the program still has one eye peeled towards the future. He took a visit to Gainesville just over a week ago which helped to secure a commitment from the transfer. Austin's career kicked off with a successful run for Orange Coach College, going 6-0 with a 1.57 ERA and 57 strikeouts enroute to being named the Orange Empire Conference Pitcher of the Year. The honors don't stop there, as Austin was also named to the Pac-12 All-Conference team for his efforts this past season. He becomes the first addition to the program for next year via the portal with the Gators well aware that they will have some needs to address over the offseason. At the moment, five former Gators have already announced intentions to enter the portal, including three pitchers.

  • Ya Gotta Believe! Gators Win in Omaha

Despite leading 1-0 for much of the game, the Gators needed some late-inning heroics to top Virginia in Florida's first Men's College World Series game.

  • Let me tell you about Miss Joni

Radiant. That’s the word I spent all night trying to find as I was thinking of the best way to describe my dear, sweet friend Joni Martin, who entered heaven’s realm Thursday night at 7:17 p.m. Our loss on earth is heaven’s gain. So, today, even though we are filled with sorrow we summon the strength to celebrate her life. Let me tell you about my friend Miss Joni. She was radiant. You felt it when you were in her presence, you even felt it on the phone. All you had to do was hear her voice. There was something about Miss Joni that disarmed you. She could see right through you. When I was a 5th-grader I had a teacher like that. We used to say Miss Tillis had X-ray eyes because she could see through our troubles and knew exactly what to say. Miss Joni was like that. Whatever you had pent up inside had a way of dissipating the way steam rises. Troubles had a way of disappearing when Miss Joni was around. Joni Martin. More than 60 years the wife of my close friend and colleague Buddy Martin. Buddy and I met at the Masters 50 years ago. I gave Buddy and Ray Holliman a ride back to their hotel in my MG on a stormy day in Augusta that postponed the third round of the tournament. The rain turned the red Georgia clay into this soggy, slick mush. My car sunk in the clay but the wheels kept spinning. Somewhere on the grounds of Augusta National my first gear gave up the ghost but somehow we made it to the highway. I must have made a decent impression because right there in that 1964 MG Ray offered me a job at Today in Cocoa making $40 more per week (big money in the 1970s) than I was making with the Savannah News-Press and I made a friend forever in Buddy. It wasn’t until years later that I was introduced to the lovely Miss Joni. It took about two seconds for her to charm me. Maybe less than two seconds. The moment I met her I knew that Buddy had an absolute rock to hold onto. Buddy and I were in the newspaper business when we met. I left before he did because there were things to do, places to go, people to meet all over the world, but in 1999 I went back to my writing roots on this thing called the internet. By that time, Buddy had done his things to do, places to go, people to meet all over the newspaper world. He won an Emmy Award producing a show for The NFL Today on CBS. St. Petersburg, New York, Denver and it seems everywhere in between Buddy was a star who won writing awards. He wrote books about famous people. Everywhere he went, Miss Joni was there, raising three rather remarkable kids and being anything and everything Buddy Martin needed. There is that old saying that behind every successful man there is a strong woman. I wouldn’t say Miss Joni was ever behind Buddy except maybe to steady him in case he might fall. I choose to believe that 99 percent of the time she was beside him step for step. I think he would agree that he couldn’t have made it without her. Buddy and the newspaper business were about to part ways in 2006 when we were in Scottsdale, Arizona as the Gators were about to crush Ohio State to win the national championship in Urban Meyer's second year as head coach. Buddy and I had built a rather solid friendship during Meyer’s first season as the Florida football coach. It seemed we were on the road constantly. We did pregame radio shows wherever and whenever the Gators played. We did an entire three hour show from his room at a Microtel, the only place in Lexington, Kentucky that had available rooms. We did a show from the lawn of the Bear Bryant Museum in Tuscaloosa. I can’t remember how much of the show was cut off when Vern Lundquist, a dear friend of Buddy and Miss Joni, somehow stepped on the power cord. Everywhere we did the show in 2005 and in 2006, Umatilla Steve was there. You could depend on him being there the way you can depend on the sun rising and setting every day. As the friendship with Buddy grew stronger, so did my friendship with Miss Joni. To know Buddy was to know Miss Joni because they were inseparable. To know Miss Joni was to know what unconditional love is all about. When it came to Buddy, her kids and grandchildren, Miss Joni had this never empty reservoir of love. She was that way with the people she called friends, too. Somehow, I was fortunate enough that she allowed me to be her friend. Unconditional love. We hear those words. Rarely do we have the chance to see words become action. Miss Joni was unique because within her heart there was this wellspring of love and thoughtful caring whose roots were in her unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. Jesus said the greatest commandment of all is to love God with all your heart, mind, body and soul. He said the second greatest commandment was to love one another. That is a perfect description of Miss Joni. She loved God. She loved people. She loved Buddy, her kids and grandkids. She loved Buddy’s friends and the people he worked with. She loved the circle of friends they built when Buddy departed the newspaper business for good and settled back in Ocala, his hometown. And through the years, I can say she loved me. I could call Buddy and we would talk for an hour about sports or the state of the writing business. I would hear Miss Joni in the background and I would say hi. She dropped whatever she was doing to offer up this warm, sweet reply, the kind that could melt problems away. Whenever I went to the Martin home in Ocala, I always looked at those photos of Miss Joni through the years. When she was young, oh my, but she never lost her beauty even as she aged. That’s radiance for you. I’ve told Buddy several times that he outkicked his coverage, not because he landed such a beautiful bride but because she had something deep inside that is indescribable. Radiance. That’s that word again. Writing about sports I often hear people talk about “it” factor. Whatever it is, Miss Joni had it in abundance. Miss Joni’s “it” factor was her radiance. She warmed up a room. You couldn’t help but like her and even if you were at a low point, feeling completely and totally unlovable, Miss Joni could lift you up. The Bible tells us that God’s word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. Well, Miss Joni’s radiance was a lamp and a light to the people she loved. My friend Clark Whitten, my former pastor from when I lived in Altamonte Springs, speaks about God’s grace so eloquently. He simplifies it in such a way that even I can understand the marvelous power of grace. Grace enables us to be a light and a lamp. It enables us to see past the faults and flaws of others because God’s grace removes the stains and the clouds that would otherwise keep us from seeing the heart of those we encounter. That’s what grace is all about. Our heart when filled with God’s grace, sees past the obstacles and allows us to love others, even the unlovable. Miss Joni had a heart filled with God’s good grace. She saw past all my faults and flaws and loved me just the same. I was her friend. I know I’m not the only friend she had – there were untold thousands I do believe – but Miss Joni had a way of making you feel that you were special, almost as if you were the only friend that mattered. That is how I will choose to remember her. My dear, dear friend. I know that when she passed from this life into a radiant life in heaven, escorted into eternity by a band of angels, that she was greeted with these words: “Well done, good and faithful servant.” I am also reminded of that verse in Hebrews where Paul writes, “Do not neglect to show kindness to strangers for in this way, without knowing it, have had angels as their guests.” I certainly am no angel, but somehow, I get the feeling that Miss Joni was either an angel or just that good and faithful servant who always had unseen angels by her side, helping her to see past all my faults and flaws. I was a stranger yet she took me in and befriended me. And so, today I grieve because I am going to miss the friendship she gave so freely. Every time we ever spoke, Miss Joni’s last words to me were always, “Love you, Franz!” I know she didn’t speak those words casually. They came directly from her heart and were words spoken with real radiance. There is that word again. Radiant. That was Miss Joni. I love you, too, Miss Joni.

  • FLORIDA RECRUITING: Gators Secure Quarterback Room with Austin Simmons' Reclassification

UPDATE: Since this story was published, there have been further reports saying that Austin Simmon's father has denied these allegations. Simmon's has still yet to officially enroll and arrive on campus. Stay tuned in to GatorBaitMedia.com for the latest. In a move that solidifies Florida football's quarterback room for 2023, Austin Simmons has made the decision to reclassify to the 2023 class. With lingering questions surrounding the position, particularly with the departure of Anthony Richardson, the Gators were in need of more depth to the room. The reclassification has been a possibility, with the rumor swirling around following the spring game when Billy Napier said that one more quarterback will be added to the room before the season begins. Photo of newly reclassified 2023 quarterback Austin Simmons on his official visit to Florida. Photo via Austin Simmon's Twitter. While Graham Mertz is expected to take the helm in week one, Napier has emphasized the team's intention to bolster the quarterback room this fall. However, instead of pursuing transfer quarterbacks, the Gators have found a solution within their own ranks with the addition of Austin Simmons. The 2025 recruit has been making waves not only on the field but also in the classroom. Having graduated in his freshman year, Simmons has been diligently working on completing his college credits. It's important to note that he should be entering his junior year in high school, yet he has been exclusively focused on college courses, close to his AA degree. Simmons' football dominance matches his academic achievements. On3's Industry Rankings have recognized him as the 72nd-best player in the 2025 cycle, the fourth-best quarterback, and the 12th-best player from Florida. Standing at 6'1", he possesses excellent height for a young quarterback, allowing him to see downfield and deliver accurate deep passes with consistency. With Simmons joining the Gators, he immediately brings the best arm talent to the quarterback room. However, there will naturally be questions about whether he is ready to start and lead the team at such a young age, two years ahead of schedule. Initially reported by Josh Newberg, citing Keith Niebuhr of On3, the news surrounding Simmons' reclassification appeared to be unofficial. However, recent developments confirm that he will indeed be heading to Gainesville this fall. This is a significant development for the Gators, providing them with an additional option at the quarterback position as the team progresses through camp. It also highlights the fact that Austin Simmons may possess even greater potential than previously believed. His presence adds depth and competition to the quarterback room, offering exciting possibilities for the future of Florida football.
