As the sun broke over the nearby Swamp, the sounds of cleats, whistles, and full-throttle energy signaled one clear message: The Sumrall Era is on.

Right now, he’s pitching a perfect game. The Gators just might have found themselves a football coach with the right mix of edge, authenticity and energy. 

When Sumrall starts rattling off names — Jayden Baugh, Jayden Woods, VB 3, Myles Graham, Dallas Wilson — you can tell he’s not just checking a recruiting box. He doesn’t gush over stars; he zeroes in on ethic.

We’ve moved into a time when eligibility for collegiate athletics is more fluid than the St. Johns River.

Sumrall said he’s already feeling good about the chemistry between offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner and the quarterbacks, a group that includes Aaron Philo and Trammell Jones. He was quick to add there’s no inside track for the starting job

Considering UF’s athletic budget is just over $200 million, perhaps siphoning some of that money into a collective may have been more expeditious in attracting better football recruits. Does anyone think for a second Indiana would have been better off limiting its NIL budget in order to upgrade facilities to the extent Florida has?

Thus, a new signing period was created. That one, the early signing period, has really made NSD a thing of the past. A relic.

The last time we saw something like this, Urban Meyer was telling players they had to earn the right to wear the Gator logo, and the rest is, well … two national championships worth of history.

What graduate degree was Beck pursuing? How did he make progress toward it in the fall with the busy football schedule? 

Schools like Florida, stuck in a cycle from the penthouse to the outhouse, can now envision a pathway toward a return to greatness and immediate results from Jon Sumrall, the firebrand some 23 years younger.
